The University was founded in 1862 by the government Dakota. With age the university more than a century, the University of South Dakota is the country's oldest institution of higher education in the state.

Through colleges and schools, including the School of Law, School of Education, College of Fine Arts, School of Health Sciences, Sanford School of Medicine, Beacom School of Business, and the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Dakota offers more than 205 undergraduate programs and 66 graduate programs. Many of the buildings that stood in the campus of the University of South Dakota. One of the famous buildings of this university is the National Music Museum. With a nickname of the Coyotes, sports team the University of South Dakota compete with sports teams from other universities in the NCAA Division I athletics competition.
