The University was formed by the merger between Lowell State and Lowell Tech in 1975, and back to the formation of the original institutions, the late-19th century Normal School and Lowell Lowell Textile School. University of Massachusetts-Lowell is part of the University of Massachusetts system.

Through college and school, including Manning School of Business, College of Health Sciences, School of Criminology and Justice Studies, Francis College of Engineering, and the College of Fine Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, UMass Lowell offers more than 120 undergraduate, 39 master's , and 33 doctoral degree programs. With its main focus the students offering experiential, "hands on" learning at a reasonable price.
