Founded in 1791, this university was chartered the same year Vermont Became the 14th state in America and is the fifth university founded in New Eangland, after Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown. University of Vermont is the first institution of higher education in America who otherwise have no affiliation with the religious.

University of Vermont or are also often referred to as UVM, an abbreviation of the Latin name "University Viridis Montis", which means "university of the green mountains". This relates to the location of the university campus Burlington, VT, less than an hour from major ski resorts like Bolton Valley, Stowe, Sugarbush, Mad River Glen and Smugglers Notch, which offers recreational facilities with stunning natural scenery.

Through college and school, including the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, College of Medicine, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Faculty of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Agriculture and Sciences, and the Faculty of Education and Social Services, University of Vermont offers 100 undergraduate majors.

There is a building on the campus of the University of Vermont who became an icon of pride university because it is the first building in the United States who received the US Green Building Council LEED Gold certification for sustainability, namely the UVM's student center.

As one well-known institutions of higher education, the university has achieved many accomplishments and penghargaa, one of which was the Nobel Peace Prize, which was won by one of its alumni, Jody Williams. In addition, there are also other alumni who also is the important and famous in the world, such as Gail Sheehy, an author.

In addition to providing a variety of academic programs, the University of Vermont also provides a wide range of non-academic activities through student organizations and associations. One of the organizations active in the Vermont campus which attracted many students is a sports club. University of Vermont has some of the 18 sports teams consisting of a team of men and women's teams are known as the Catamounts, who compete in NCAA Division I athletic competition.
