While on the other academic activities, especially athletics, UCSD has several varsity sports teams are comprised of a team of men and women who are famous team mascot nicknamed King Triton, who participated in the Division II athletics competitions. King Triton is a nod to the school's proximity to the Pacific.

One of the UCSD athletic teams that have won a lot of achievements and awards are surfing team, the which has won six national championships and is consistently ranked among the best surf programs in the country.
