The University was founded in 1842 by Methodist leaders and affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Since the beginning of its establishment, Ohio Wesleyan University has not discriminate students with ethnic background, religion or race. Ohio Wesleyan University is a member of the Ohio Lima, Ohio consortium of liberal arts colleges.

Through high school and college has, Ohio Wesleyan University offers over 90 majors, minors and concentrations. While specific to engineering students, they can partake in a 3-2 programs, liberal arts students roomates grant bachelor's degrees in three years and sends them to the engineering schools like the California Institute of Technology for an additional, two-year bachelor's degree.

In addition, Ohio Wesleyan University also offers special programs to the students that have to gain practical experience while still in school, such as the program "Wesleyan in Washington", which grants academic credit to students working full-time government jobs and internships in Washington, D.C.

The university also provides relief in the form of policies for applicants with GPAs greater than 3.5 at the end of their high school junior year can opt not to submit test scores.

There are 23 university teams competing in Division III athletics. According to the university, between varsity, intramural and club sports, 75% of Ohio Wesleyan students Participate in athletics.
