The university was founded in 1855 and named after its founder, Ovid Butler.

Through six academic colleges, including the College of Business, College of Communication, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and the Jordan College of the Arts, Butler University offers more than 65 majors of study, and with about 18 master's programs.
